    Eat foods rich in vitamins and minerals by snacking on fresh fruits and vegetables. The Washington Post's article "Detox After The Holidays" suggests including fresh-squeezed orange juice and fruits, like strawberries, with breakfast. Lunch should be rich in vegetables, and so should dinner. For protein, pass on meats and go for nuts. Nuts are rich in good fats and give the body energy.

Heat treating steel can fundamentally change its properties. The process can transform steel from something that is soft and malleable to a material that is hard and brittle. Using liquids to harden steel is a process known as quench-hardening. The standard method for quench-hardening with water and then tempering is taught in metal shop classes everywhere. It can be tricky, but with the right steel and the proper technique, you can quench harden steel.

    Put on protective clothing. Bring the forge or furnace up to temperature. If not utilizing a forge or furnace, light your torch.

    Use tongs to place the steel in the furnace or forge. Place the steel on a prepared firebrick hearth if using a torch. Heat the steel to between 1450 and 1500 degrees Fahrenheit. Use a pyrometer to measure the steel's surface temperature. If you don't have a pyrometer, watch for the steel to glow cherry red.

    Grasp the steel firmly with tongs and plunge it into a container of water. Agitate the steel vigorously to ensure a thorough quench. Test the hardness of the steel by attempting to file it. The filing process should be very difficult.

Tempering

    Clean the steel with emery cloth until you can see bright metal. Place the steel back in the forge or furnace. If you don't have a forge or furnace, begin reheating the steel with the torch.

    Watch the steel carefully in order to track color changes. A progression of colors will take place, starting with yellows to browns and finishing with purples and blues. Stop heating at a pale straw yellow color for good edge holding ability. Continue heating to blue for higher resistance to impact.

    Stop heating the steel when the desired temper is reached. Place the steel on an anvil or other heavy metal surface. This surface will act as a heat-sink while the steel cools. The implement can be used when it has fully cooled.

Body Cleansing Diets

There is a great deal of argument regarding the benefits of cleansing diets. There are many who swear by the efficacy of these cleanses, claiming that by purging excess toxins, they feel more energized, healthy, mentally alert and de-stressed. A number dietitians, though, believe cleanse diets are at best, a fad, and at worst, harmful to the digestive system.

Juice Only Cleanse

    The juice fast is exactly what it sounds like: for a period of time ranging from one day to a week, the participant ingests nothing but freshly extracted juices of raw organic fruits and vegetables.

    It's recommended that those who wish to try juice fasts start slowly by trying a one day juice fast first, before eventually attempting a few days or a week later on. It's a good idea to prepare for juice fasts by engaging in a raw foods cleanse (see below) for three or four days, leading up to the juice fast, so as to make the experience less severe. After the juice fast, engage in the raw foods cleanse again for a couple of days, to lead yourself back into your regular diet.

    The fasts should not be back to back; it's best to put a week of solid foods in between one-day juice fasts, and a month between three-day juice fasts.

    The benefit of juice fasting over water fasting is that the participant still gets the nutrients and calories he needs. The enzymes that are also present in freshly extracted fruit and vegetable juice are also necessary for basic functioning.

    It's also a good idea to avoid nutritional supplements during a juice fast, as they can frequently cause stomach upset and nausea unless taken with solid foods.

Raw Foods Cleanse

    The raw foods cleanse is one of the more agreeable cleanses, as it doesn't involve going hungry. Any complications with following the plan arise in the details: to do this cleanse, one cannot eat cooked food. Only fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans and grains. No dairy, meat or egg products are allowed. Vinegar dressings on vegetables are okay, as long as the dressing is nothing but vinegar. Because many fruit juices are pasteurized, this fast would exclude them as well. Clean, fresh water will be the beverage during this fast.

    For anywhere from a couple of days to a week, the raw foods cleanse participant will eat nothing but raw, uncooked fruits and vegetables, nuts, legumes and grains. If possible, try to eat only fresh, organic produce during the fast. Health food stores, co-ops and farmers markets are the best bet for what you'll need. For those who live in rural areas without health food stores or co-ops, farmers markets are much more common.

Master Cleanse

    The Master Cleanse, also known as "The Lemonade Diet," is a cleanse developed by Stanley Burroughs as a detoxification process. Currently, this cleanse also is being suggested as a weight-loss regimen. The cleanse drink consists of fresh lemon juice, organic maple syrup, cayenne pepper and filtered water. No solid foods are eaten. The "lemonade" is drunk six or more times a day.

    While this cleanse is effective for weight loss, it is also completely nutrient deficient and can result in muscle loss more than fat loss. Additionally, many dietitians claim that because a functioning liver already detoxifies the body, a master cleanse only serves to rob the body of essential nutrients and calories. Frequently, weight lost on a master cleanse is put back on, as much of the weight lost is water weight, rather than fat.

Antibacterial Diets

The human body, by most estimates, contains roughly four quadrillion bacteria. Many of these microorganisms are entirely harmless, some even helpful, while others are the causes of maladies ranging from gum disease and cavities to bacterial infection. Like so much about the body, your dietary intake can affect the bacteria living inside you.

    All things in moderation, goes the saying, and this certainly applies to the amount of bacteria in your body. Consider the stomach. Bacteria in the stomach are vitally important in helping break down food during digestion. These bacteria are called the "normal flora" or "indigenous microbiota" of the stomach.     On the other hand, an excess of bacteria in the stomach can lead to a condition known as SIBO, or small intestine bacterial overgrowth, as well as a number of other maladies. SIBO can cause gas, abdominal pains, bloating and diarrhea, and is often associated with irritable bowel syndrome. If you have an excess of bacteria in your system, it's important to try to bring these bacteria back in check.

Diet for Bacteria

    Bacteria thrive on sugars, and produce alcohols as the product of their digestion of these sugars. In order to slow the growth of bacteria in your stomach, consider a diet that eliminates table sugar and sugar-based syrups like maple syrup or molasses. Also avoid soft drinks, fruit juices and sweet condiments and sauces, as these products are also high in the simple, fast-releasing sugars on which bacteria thrive. Where you can, also consider avoiding fruits and starchy vegetables, as these foods will also contribute to bacterial growth. Take vitamins to make up for deficiencies that these restrictions might create in your diet.

    The other side of the coin is that you'll want to avoid increasing the alcohol content in your stomach, as it is already heightened by the excess bacteria. Don't drink alcohol, of course; also avoid vinegar and vinegar-based condiments, as these are also created through the process of fermentation. Limit your intake of pickled foods as well, for the same reason.

42 million Americans have high bad cholesterol levels. Bad diet tends to lead to high cholesterol. To lower cholesterol, it starts with diet. Sometimes knowing what to eat, and what not to eat is the problem. There is good and bad cholesterol. Bad cholesterol, known as LDL, clogs arteries which can lead to heart attacks or strokes. It's quite easy why a lot of Americans suffer from high cholesterol. Simply what we eat. Majority of the American diet is made up of large amounts of saturated fat and trans fats.     Replace fats. You want to replace the bad fats, with good fats. You still need to eat fats. Too many fats is not a good thing, but in this case you want to replace the fats that you eat. Get more fats like polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats into your diet. The Mediterranean diet is make up of mostly these fats. Both of these fats will lower bad cholesterol levels. The percentage of fats you should eat daily, are between 24-35 percent of the calories you've eaten.

Too much omega-6 can lead to health problems, though. Eat fish for example, if you like fish of course. You'll find salmon, trout, sardines, and herring. Also, eat a lot of nuts. Nuts are good sources for both polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats. Walnuts are extremely healthy, along with pecans, hazelnuts, almonds, macadamia nuts, and cashews. Use peanut butter, or eat peanuts. Peanuts is a great source to help lower cholesterol. Get more soybeans into your diet as well.

    Eating foods high in monounsaturated fats. You'll also find a good source of monounsaturated fats in nuts like I've mention. Majority of monounsaturated fats you'll find is in olive oil. One of the key ingredients made up in the Mediterranean diet. A lot of actual foods don't always contain a high amount of monounsaturated fats. However, avocado contains a good amount.

    Take omega-3 fish oils and get more omega-3 into your diet. A very important fat, is omega-3. Take actual omega-3 supplements, but try to eat foods that are high in omega-3. For example, obviously fish contains a great source of omega-3 in them. Walnuts and flaxseed oil is the next best bet.

    Vegetables high in omega-3: Cauliflower, cabbage, romaine lettuce, broccoli, brussel sprouts, squash, collard greens, spinach, green beans and broccoli.

Detoxification programs are as widely varied in their rules as they are in their benefits. Detox plans may be recommended by health care practitioners to reduce a particular toxin or drug buildup in your body, to strengthen your natural systems or processes, or to kick-start a weight loss program. Since programs are designed with specific results in mind, the foods you eat during this time vary accordingly to help support the detox process.

How to Prepare

    Read through and understand your detox program completely. Ask questions in advance. With a shopping list, visit your local farmer's market, co-op, health food store or grocery store to stock up on foods you'll need. Choose organic, local and seasonal foods that are available fresh in your area.

Foods to Eat

    In general, many detox foods are highly perishable, so make time to shop once or twice a week while you're detoxing. When eating out, ask questions about preparation to ensure menu items meet detox standards. Try salads or vegetable side dishes (such as sauted spinach with garlic) as your main course, or ask if a vegan option is available; many restaurants will create something for you. It works because your caloric intake is relegated to some 600 calories per day solely due to the diet's sugar content, nothing more, nothing less. Forget the detox part -- your liver and kidney do that for you, and unless you've overdosed on mercury or some other hazardous substance that embeds itself in your tissues, no diet will "detox" that. Will the Master Cleanse work for fast weight loss? Sure, as long as you don't overdo it.

    But ... you do know that this is a fad diet, right? Sure, celebrities have used it to lose weight as they have many other fad diets, but just because they're famous doesn't mean they're not just as gullible as John Q. Public.

    Add the lemon only if you want taste. Compared to the power of your stomach acid, the scant amount of lemon juice in the Master Cleanse recipe is not acidic enough to do jack squat, putting it bluntly. Lemon does, however, make sugar water more tasty, but you can also use lemon extract, lemon flavoring, lime juice, etc., instead -- whatever's already in your pantry or fridge.

    Forgo the cayenne pepper. According to the much-quoted Dr. Ed Zimney (see Resources), who debunked the Master Cleanse mystique, cayenne pepper is added to irritate the bowels into "moving." Unless you have a problem with constipation, there's no need to simulate laxative abuse. And if you do have chronic constipation, this is something your doctor should know about -- not the people who write detox diet plans. You could have a serious health disorder brewing.

    Make a 60-ounce daily serving of the Master Cleanse by mixing up the following recipe:

Your bowels will tend to themselves, although you may want to stick close to a bathroom. Drinking sugar-water all day has its ... disadvantages, we might say.

    Stop this diet after ten (10) days. Why? To continue it past this time is dangerous and can lead to malnutrition and a host of serious ailments. Additionally, consuming only sugar-water can cause more harm than good to the organs that it purports to help: your liver and kidneys. Expect to binge eat after you end the Master Cleanse -- this is normal. Yikes. You've only been starving yourself!

The thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland at the base of your throat. Though small, it's job is huge: to regulate and manufacture hormones that control growth and metabolism. Sometimes, an abnormal growth may appear on the thyroid. A doctor may discover it by feeling it with her hands or a person might see it when looking in the mirror. Chances are, this growth is a cyst. According to the Mayo Clinic, about half of all people have a thyroid cyst (also called a "thyroid nodule"), though many people never know it is there.

What is a thyroid cyst?

    A thyroid cyst is a fluid-filled sac that has grown on the thyroid. The cyst may be very small (less than 1 mm in diameter) or so large that it may be visible to the naked eye, appearing as a lump on your throat. Some cysts are entirely filled with fluid ("cystic") and others are composed of both fluids and solids ("complex"). If the cyst is large and complex, a doctor may want to biopsy its components to make sure that it is not cancerous.

Symptoms of a Small Cyst

    People with smaller cysts (3mm or smaller) on their thyroid typically don't have any symptoms. Most of these people will not realize that they have a cyst until a doctor discovers it during an exam.

Symptoms of a Large Cysts

    People with larger cysts do not necessarily have any symptoms either, although they may feel or see a lump at the base of their throat. However, sometimes those with large cysts may feel it pressing against their windpipe, have pains in their neck, have trouble swallowing, or less frequently, have a change in the tone and quality of their voice as it presses against their vocal cords. Cysts are rarely cancerous, but malignant cysts tend to feel hard, grow large quickly, and cause a change in your voice more often than benign cysts. Occasionally large cysts can affect the function of your thyroid and cause you to overproduce or under-produce the hormone that stimulates the thyroid (thus causing a hyperactive or under-active thyroid).

Causes/Risk Factors

    No one knows for certain what causes thyroid cysts to develop, however, it is believed that the following factors may have some relation: a lack of iodine in the diet, an autoimmune disorder that causes inflammation of the thyroid (Hashimoto's disease), a genetic defect, exposure to radiation in childhood. Further, you are more likely to develop a thyroid cyst if you are: a woman, over the age of 40, or if one of your parents or siblings has a thyroid cyst.

Diagnosis

    If your cyst is large, fast-growing, complex or otherwise "suspicious" your doctor may want to do a fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy to make sure that it is not cancerous. In this 20-minute procedure, your doctor will insert a very thin needle into the nodule and withdraw a sample of its components. The sample will be analyzed at a laboratory. If the components are determined to be malignant or suspicious, you'd likely need to have surgery to remove the cyst and determine the extent of the malignancy. Your doctor can also evaluate the nodule through an ultrasound or blood tests to determine whether and/or the extent to which it is affecting the function of your thyroid. These methods do not, however, determine whether or not the cyst is malignant.

Treatment

    Usually there is no treatment required for cysts, particularly if the cyst is small and fluid-filled. Your doctor may want you to come in for follow-up visits, however, to monitor the growth and nature of the cyst, plus take periodic blood test to make sure the cyst is not affecting the functioning of your thyroid. Alternatively, you might be placed on thyroid hormone suppression therapy to shrink the cyst (although many doctors find this unnecessary, if the cyst is small and determined to be non-malignant). If the cyst is affecting the functioning of your thyroid, you may be required to take radioactive iodine for a few months. The iodine can can help shrink the nodules.

The method you use depends largely on the type of fruit you're using. For example, various berries and cherries are simple: press the fruit to extract the juice and then strain it. Instructions

Boiling Method (lower-water content fruits -- apples, pears, grapes etc.)

    Wash, peel and slice the fruit. If you're using grapes, they don't need to be peeled or sliced, however, you should remove the stems.

    Place the fruit and sugar to taste (amount varies by fruit and preference) in a pan and add water until the fruit is covered. Heat to boiling and cook for about 30 minutes or until the fruit is soft and pulpy.

    Strain the liquid into another container, repeating the process until the juice is free of particulate. Add water to taste when you're ready to drink.

Freezing Method (high-water content fruits -- oranges, grapefruits, etc.)

    Express the juice from the fruit into a container. This can be done by hand squeezing or by using a juicing device. Strain the juice to remove seeds or any unwanted pulp.

    Pour the juice into a narrow-necked container such as a jug. Cover and place in your freezer until the juice is completely frozen.

    Remove the cover and suspend the container over another container large enough to contain the melted juice. Allow the juice to thaw only to the point where the juice has dripped out but the water content is mostly still contained within the jug as a block of ice. Repeat the freezing and thawing process twice more to attain a concentrated juice.
