How to Purge the Body of Toxins

Day-to-day life, stress and poor diet can leave you feeling sluggish and unhealthy. This is why detoxifying cleanses are so popular. The goal of a detox is to purge toxins and then replenish the body with healthy nutrients, leaving you revitalized. There are varied theories about how to rid the body of toxins, but the most common steps are to cleanse your system through fasting, cleanse your colon and replenish your body with healthy nutrients.

How to cleanse and rid the body of toxins.

    1

Eliminate your toxin intake. Fasting through juicing for a period of three to seven days is ideal. Only drink vegetable juices, fresh fruit juices (freshly juiced is best -- you may need to purchase a juicer) and purified water during the fasting period. This provides you with healthy vitamins and minerals and allows your organs to rest. The theory is that your body will be able to flush toxins out when they are no longer being ingested. While the idea of ridding the body of toxins may be appealing, you might not want to go the "liquids only" route. For this, limit your dietary choices to something similar to a vegan diet. You also need to cut out alcohol, coffee, cigarettes, refined sugars, saturated fats and as much stress as possible. All of these add toxins to the body during your cleanse.

    2

Use supplements to help you detox. Go to your local health food store and purchase detox tea or herbs that target specific body parts. There are many herbs and teas you can take to target specific organs like the lungs, colon, and liver. For example, dandelion root is good for the liver, and ginger and cayenne help to cleanse kidneys. Both these organs filter your system and will need to be cleansed.

    3

Cleanse your colon. The toxins processed by the liver are sent to your intestines to be eliminated. Your colon is like the city dump for toxic buildup. The best way to cleanse your colon is to adopt a high-fiber diet that includes lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and high-fiber whole grains. Some choose the fast track and go for a colonic. Colonic hydrotherapy breaks down toxic excrement and removes wastes and buildup in a series of treatments. A colonic can also help speed the metabolic process, expel parasites and lead to weight loss.

    4

Adopt a healthy lifestyle. After going through the cleansing process, you need to change your daily habits. It doesn't make sense to go through the arduous cleanse only to dump more toxins back into your body. The most effective way to do this is through diet and healthy lifestyle practices. Eat plenty of fiber, and protect the liver with herbs such as dandelion root and by drinking green tea. Take vitamins. Drink 2 quarts of water daily. Manage stress with tools like yoga and meditation, and sweat out toxins through exercise or in saunas.
