About 27 million Americans have some type of thyroid disorder, according to the the National Institutes of Health. Naturopaths recommend many foods as being good for thyroid function, and a change in diet may help people dealing with this common health problem.
Iodine
Iodine is important for thyroid function, but supplements can supply too much and actually worsen the problem. Food sources are better. These include seaweed and kelp, dairy products, eggs, strawberries, onions and radishes.
Seafood
Seafood also is a good source of iodine. Shellfish and marine fish generally contain more than freshwater fish. Good options include Atlantic salmon, cod, haddock, herring, mackerel, sardines and tuna.
Foods to Avoid
Cruciferous vegetables inhibit iodine utilization in the body and should be avoided. These include broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, kale and watercress.
Selenium
Increasing selenium intake can help thyroid function. Foods high in selenium include whole-grain breads and cereals, Brazil nuts, poultry liver, pork, seafood and shiitake mushrooms.
Additional Foods
Other foods recommended by naturopaths for thyroid function include apricots, asparagus, avocados, bananas, carrots, olive oil and sunflower seeds.
