The Method to Mix Fruit With Sugar & Lemon Juice

The Method to Mix Fruit With Sugar & Lemon Juice

A simple fruit salad can serve as a tasty treat on a summer day, but you can easily take it to the next level by mixing the cut fruit with sugar and lemon juice. The lemon juice adds extra complexity to the flavor by providing a tangy note, while the sugar serves to counteract some of the sourness of the lemon and also form a sweet, wet coating on the fruit pieces. Because the lemon juice draws the moisture out of the fruit pieces and can leave them soft, you should mix the ingredients just before serving the fruit salad. Alternately, you can mix fruit with sugar and lemon juice then let it sit for an hour before spooning the resulting wet mixture over cake or ice cream. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

    1

Place the sliced or cut fruit into a glass bowl.

    2

Sprinkle the fruit with the sugar, distributing the sugar as evenly as possible over the fruit.

    3

Sprinkle the sugared fruit with the lemon juice, distributing the juice as evenly as possible over the fruit.

    4

Gently stir the mixture with a wooden spoon. Do not be too aggressive as you stir unless you want to bruise and soften the fruit to create more syrup. If you wish to serve a fruit salad with fairly intact pieces of fruit, stir as gently as you can. Stop stirring after you have thoroughly mixed the ingredients.

    5

Allow the fruit to sit for several moments before serving it as a fruit salad. This will give the flavors time to blend. Allow the mixed fruit to sit for an hour or longer, stirring occasionally, if you want to make a somewhat syrupy mixture that you can spoon over cake, ice cream or other desserts.
