What Foods Can You Have on the Modified Profast Diet?

The Modified Profast diet, available from the Metabolic Medical Center, is designed to reduce the amount of simple sugar intake and, at the same time, help with maintaining a diet containing the right amount of protein. Eating two nutritionally balanced shakes as a meal replacement is the main component of the Modified Profast diet, as well as eating one or two small meals consisting of lean meats and vegetables daily.

Lean Proteins

    Eating foods high in lean protein, such as chicken breast, turkey, shellfish, tuna, salmon, eggs, 1 percent milk, cottage cheese and yogurt are an important requirement of the diet. White meats are more lean than dark meats. Check for acceptable alternatives or substitutes to high-fat protein foods. For example, look for a tofu version of some foods, such as tofu burger patties. Many meats are made with turkey. Substitute regular bacon with turkey bacon. Instead of hot dogs, look for turkey dogs. Buy cheese made with skim milk or 1 or 2 percent milk as an alternative to regular cheese.

Carbohydrates

    The Modified Profast diet carefully spreads out your intake of carbohydrates throughout the day by eating the lean meats and approved vegetables from the program. Surprisingly, peanut butter, almonds, cashews, soybeans and regular beans are allowed, but are considered a carbohydrate with the Modified Profast plan, not a protein. When it comes to carbs that are the best for the diet, whole grains supply the most nutrients, preferably wheat. However, oats, quinoa, spelt and kamut are also acceptable and found in most health foods stores. Avoid white carbs, like potatoes, rice, bread, pastas, candies, cereals and sweets.

Drinks

    The importance of drinking five to ten 12-ounce glasses of water or liquid each day is important with the Modified Profast plan. Allowed liquids include coffee, tea, soda water and Perrier. Also, up to four diet sodas daily, four sugar-free popsicles and any type of sugar-free frozen bar are acceptable.
