What to Eat for Painful Urination

Painful urination can come about from a variety of reasons. Urinary or bladder infections can cause a burning sensation when urinating, so it's wise to be tested if the burning persists. Sometimes the foods we eat can cause our urine to be less acidic which in turn causes painful urination. Eliminating or adding certain foods to your diet may help decrease pain during urination.

Foods

Interstistial cystitis, also known as IC, is a condition affecting the bladder walls. People with this condition find that following a certain diet can lessen their symptoms. Foods that aggravate the bladder and cause painful urination include bologna, ham, hot dogs, pepperoni, aged cheeses, sour cream, yogurt, chili peppers, onions, tomato juice and sauce, all citrus fruits, kiwi, pineapple and chocolate. Foods that seem not to cause irritation are rice, pasta, white bread, beef, chicken, eggs, fish, turkey, cream cheese, vanilla ice cream, broccoli, carrots, cabbage, pears, carrot cake and sugar cookies.

Beverages and Condiments

Certain beverages and condiments can also play a part in affecting the bladder and urine consistency. Beverages that can irritate the bladder and cause pain during urination are coffee, sodas, chocolate milk, beer, wine, tea and citrus juices. Drinks that should not bother the bladder would be chamomile and mint tea, water, milk and decaf low acid coffees. Certain condiments should also be avoided such as ketchup, mustard, soy sauce, vinegar and Worcestershire sauce. Salt, garlic, oregano and basil should be okay.

Avoiding Chemicals

Certain chemicals from fragrant soaps, lotions and bubble baths can irritate the genital areas. When irritation occurs, it can spread to the urethra and cause burning or pain during urination. If you have found irritation after using these products, discontinue use and see if the irritation goes away. Douching can also cause irritation especially when using those with a fragrance.

Eliminating problematic foods and beverages and discontinuing use of products with certain chemicals should help to alleviate painful urination symptoms. If not, consult your doctor as you could have an infection.
