Food for Fibroids

Food for Fibroids

As many as 70 percent percent of women will develop fibroids in their lifetime. Fibroids range from the size of a pea to the size of a grapefruit and are located within or around the uterus. Usually fibroids are not cancerous, but create many unpleasant symptoms that range from feeling fullness in the abdomen to excessive bleeding. The predominance of estrogen in the female system is thought to be a cause of fibroids. While no food has been shown to eliminate or shrink fibroids, dietary measures can be taken to improve your overall health and not exacerbate a fibroid problem.

Whole Grains

Consume more whole grains. Whole grains cleanse the system and can help flush toxins and debris from the system. Add flax to your diet. Sprinkle ground flax seed into cold cereal, oatmeal and mix into baked goods when baking. Look for baked goods that contain high levels of fiber and whole grains.

Fresh Fruit and Vegetables

Add a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables to your diet. Choose dark, leafy greens such as spinach if you are experiencing low iron levels due to excessive blood loss from fibroids. Add fresh papaya to your diet. The enzymes in papaya aid in digestion and help flush debris from your body. Beans of all kinds have high levels of fiber that promote proper digestion. This in turn helps cleanse your system.

Foods to Avoid

Foods to avoid when you have fibroids range from beef and chicken to soy products. Typically, commercially prepared beef and chicken are rife with added hormones. In turn, these hormones build up in a woman's body, sometimes leading to the growth of fibroids. Choose organically prepared meats as a health diet alternative. Likewise, dairy products are known to contain high levels of hormones, and these too, can impact estrogen levels in a woman's body. Soy products in particular add to estrogen levels in the body, which may in turn lead to the formation of fibroids. It is best to avoid all soy products for this reason.
