What Is Orange Juice From Concentrate?

Oranges date back 4,000 years to Asia and China. Spaniards introduced oranges to Florida in the 1500s. In the United States, the orange juice industry emerged around the 1920s. Juice concentrates first appeared in the mid-1940s and made orange juice a favorite breakfast beverage nationwide. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Features

    Orange processing begins by squeezing the juice from oranges and straining out the seeds and pulp. A process using heat and vacuum pressure then pulls the water out of the juice, leaving a thick concentrate.

Significance

    Because oranges start loosing their nutritional benefits quickly, juice concentrates can be frozen until they are needed. To prepare juice for packaging as a ready to drink beverage, manufacturers blend water back into the concentrate.

Types

    Today, you can buy juice made from concentrate or juice blended and packaged immediately after extraction from the orange. Both kinds are pasteurized to preserve freshness and may be fortified with additional vitamins, orange oils or pulp.

Benefits

    Processing for both forms of juice removes some nutrients from fresh oranges. According to the Ohio State University Extension, both methods produce juice that provides more than a day's worth of vitamin C.
