Crash diets can help you lose weight in a hurry. Typically, these diets limit you to less than 1200 calories a day, starvation level. Doctors warn that crash diets damage the heart and any pounds lost usually are regained when you stop the diet. While exercise and a sensible diet are the best way to achieve permanent weight loss, occasions such as weddings and school reunions may make you want to lose some weight fast. Before starting any diet, you should consult your physician.

Cleanse

    The master cleanse is one of the most popular diets for fast, effective weight loss. This diet, also known as the lemonade diet or maple syrup diet, is billed as a detoxification. Make a drink of fresh squeezed lemon juice, maple syrup, cayenne pepper and water, and drink six to 12 glasses a day. This diet also recommends use of laxatives, but check with a doctor about whether this is safe for you.

Low-Carbohydrate

    There are several varieties of the low-carbohydrate diet, the most popular of which are the Atkins and the South Beach diets. The diets vary some but all restrict carbohydrates and promote lean protein and vegetables. Restricted foods include sweets, pasta, bread, dairy and many fruits.

Liquid

    Liquid diets include SlimFast shakes, OptiFast and juice fasts. While most weight loss from liquid diets will be quickly regained once you go back to your regular diet, you can lose pounds rapidly with this method. Both SlimFast and OptiFast recommend eating a balanced dinner for one meal a day and combining the program with exercise.
