What Is the Danger of Taking Diet Pills?

Diet pills--such as Fen-Fen and Dexatrim--have been used over the years to lose weight quickly. Diet pills have been a source of controversy because most diet pills aren't endorsed by medical doctors. Diet pills have been known to permanently damage the body. These pills have dangerous side effects and are often compared to amphetamines.

Anxiety or Nervousness

Because of the high doses of caffeine and ephedra, diet pills can make people feel anxious and nervous. Diet pills can make people feel like they just drank a cup of coffee because of the caffeinated feeling.

High Blood Pressure

Because diet pills raise metabolism quickly, they can also have an adverse effect on the heart. As a result, diet pills can cause elevated blood pressure levels.

Gastrointestinal Issues

Diet pills interrupt the body's natural cycle and don't absorb fat easily. Because of this, gastrointestinal issues can happen. Diarrhea, nausea and vomiting are common side effects associated with diet pills.

Heart Attacks

People could suffer from a heart attack if pills are taken for an extended period of time. Diets pills can cause an irregular heartbeat and increase metabolism very quickly, which could contribute to cardiac arrest.

Lowered Immune System

Diet pills deplete the body of proper nutrients from food. As a result of deficient nutrients, the immune system is compromised. People are more at risk to develop bacterial and viral infections.
