Dangers of the Master Cleanse

The Master Cleanse, commonly called the lemonade diet, is a liquid diet which involves drinking lemon juice mixed with maple syrup, water and cayenne pepper; water mixed with sea salt; and a laxative tea. This is a 10-day diet which promises to help people lose 2 pounds a day.

Considerations

Because it is a starvation diet which also causes diarrhea, the Master Cleanse can result in vitamin deficiencies, electrolyte disruption, blood sugar problems and muscle breakdown.

Special Situations

The Master Cleanse can aggravate chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and kidney disease.

Laxative Abuse

The Master Cleanse is also dangerous for people who do the diet repeatedly. Laxative abuse, as noted by the National Eating Disorders Association, can cause severe dehydration, along with heart and colon damage.

Toxin Buildup

Although the Master Cleanse is promoted as a detoxification diet, it can actually cause toxins to build up because it depletes glutathione in the liver, according to internal medicine specialist Peter Pressman of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Metabolic Acidosis

Laxatives acidify the blood, which can cause metabolic acidosis. Along with the dehydration and glutathione depletion, this can result in dizziness, weakness, nausea and vomiting.
