Lemon Juice & Honey Remedies

Lemon Juice & Honey Remedies

Both honey and lemon juice are said to be natural energizers and immune system boosters. Combined in various ways, lemon and honey can make home remedies for any number of common ailments from the flu to leg cramps. Many of these remedies have been used in homes around the world for thousands of years.

Coughs and Colds

Lemon juice is high in vitamin C, and honey has antioxidant properties. Many cold and flu remedies call for a combination of lemon juice, honey, and hot water; this is also considered a preventative beverage. Or make a soothing cup of ginger tea by boiling water, fresh ginger, sliced lemon, mashed garlic and honey. An old fashioned cough syrup can be made by combining lemon juice, glycerin and honey. To soothe a sore throat, try combining equal parts lemon juice and honey with a dash of cayenne pepper.

Stomach Problems

Consuming diluted lemon juice with honey is believed to purify the blood and relieve abdominal discomfort. Combine equal parts lemon juice and honey -- about a teaspoon of each -- to potentially relieve vomiting, indigestion, and heartburn. A concoction of fresh squeezed lemon and goat's milk is said to ease diarrhea. Taken three times daily, a tonic of mint, lime juice and honey may help with morning sickness.

Aches and Pains

Diluted lemon juice may ease menstrual cramps and excessive bleeding. To ease leg pains caused by over-exertion, take a concoction of lemon juice, honey, and warm water twice daily. This remedy is said to take up to one week to take full affect. Ingesting honey may also assuage hangovers.

Weight Loss

Drinking lemon juice in the morning is believed by some to prevent constipation and aid in weight loss, partially by reducing water retention. When done daily before ingesting food this is a popular diet. Taken after a meal, this same mixture can be a digestive and may help detoxify the body. Honey can also be used as a sugar substitute to reduce calories.

Other Treatments

Lemon and honey are also reputed to help stop hiccups. Combine one part honey with two parts lemon juice plus a bit of salt. Because of the citric acid in lemons, taken a few times a day a combination of lemon juice, water and honey is said to cure bad breath. Honey stirred into hot milk or chamomile tea can relax the body and may assuage sleeplessness. Applying honey and/or fresh lemon juice to acne is said to relieve it. Breathing in the steam from a hot honey, water, and lemon may act as a natural energizer.
