Alternative Ways to Lower a High Thyroid Number

A high thyroid number indicates you have hyperthyroidism. This condition is caused by excess production of thyroid hormone. It can cause an accelerated heart rate, anxiety, weight loss regardless of calories consumed, insomnia and increased perspiration. Natural treatments are best used as a complement to standard therapies and you should consult with a health care provider experienced in natural medicine for guidance. Do not use natural supplements without talking to your doctor first. The University of Maryland Medical Center gives several suggestions.

Improve Thyroid Function with Nutrition

    Certain dietary habits can complement your overactive thyroid treatments. Do not consume foods that interfere with thyroid function. They include broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, kale, spinach, turnips, soybeans, peanuts, linseed, pine nuts, millet, cassava and mustard greens.

    B-vitamins are beneficial. They are abundant in whole grains and fortified breads and cereals. Seaweed and other sea vegetables are also good source. Eat antioxidant rich foods like fruits and vegetables (excluding the ones mentioned above) and beans.

    L-carnitine decreases thyroid activity. Take 2,000 mg daily. An iodine supplement might be beneficial but only if you are deficient in iodine, a rarity in the Western world. Your doctor can check for deficiency and recommend appropriate supplementation if necessary.

    Eliminate or reduce your intake of caffeine in all forms. Its stimulating properties will exacerbate hyperthyroidism.

Experiment with Alternative Treatments

    Acupuncture has been shown to benefit hormonal imbalances and it might be beneficial for hyperthyroidism. Always work with a licensed practitioner. Acupuncturists are often trained in traditional Chinese medicine and might be able to offer advice on herbs and other natural treatment strategies. The herb lemon balm might normalize excess thyroid activity. Take 300 to 500 mg daily.

    The University of Maryland Medical Center states little research exists for homeopathic treatments for this condition but a professional homeopath might be able to recommend a course of treatment based on his knowledge and experience. Homeopathy is a very individualized system of medicine, basing treatments on specific factors. Consulting with a professional is the best way to design a treatment plan.

Other Suggestions

    Avoid herbs that can stimulate thyroid activity, including include ashwagandha, bladderwrack, and ginseng. Do not smoke or use tobacco in any form.

    Try to exercise for at least 30 minutes several days a week. Use a castor oil pack on the throat to relieve inflammation. Put the oil on a clean cloth, put it over the throat and cover in plastic. Cover with a heat source for 30 to 60 minutes for three days straight.
