48-Hour Clear Liquid Diet

A clear liquid diet consists of taking in only clear liquids like water, broth, and gelatin. There are many reasons liquid diets are used. A clear liquid may be used as a body cleanse or detox, a quick weight loss remedy, to prepare for a medical procedure or for digestive issues.

What are the Clear Liquids?

The diet consists of three liquid meals each day with two liquid snacks. Drink three to five beverage servings a day, including six to eight glasses of water. The following liquids are considered clear and allowed on this diet: plain water, fruit juice without pulp (grape, apple or cranberry), strained lemonade and fruit punch, broth, clear soda and sports drinks, plain gelatin, honey, ice pops with no fruit pieces, and tea or coffee without cream.

Day One

For breakfast, have 1 cup grape juice, 1 cup water, 1 cup chicken broth and 1 cup gelatin. For a snack, have 1 cup coffee or tea without cream and 1 cup gelatin.

For lunch, have 1 cup apple juice, 1 cup water, 1 cup chicken broth and 1 cup gelatin. For a snack, have 1 ice pop without fruit pieces and 1 cup tea or coffee without cream.

For dinner, have 1 cup lemonade, 1 cup chicken broth, 1 cup gelatin, and 1 cup coffee or tea without cream.

Day Two

For breakfast, have 1 cup cranberry juice, 1 cup water, 1 cup beef broth and 1 cup gelatin. For a snack, have soda and 1 cup gelatin.

For lunch, have 1 cup fruit punch, 1 cup water, 1 cup beef broth and 1 cup gelatin. For a snack, have sports drinks and 1 cup tea or coffee without cream.

For dinner, have 1 cup apple juice, 1 cup beef broth, 1 cup gelatin, and 1 cup tea or coffee without cream.

Remember to incorporate six to eight glasses of water between meals each day. A clear liquid diet does not provide adequate nutrients or calories and therefore should last no longer than three days. If a clear liquid diet is prescribed by doctor, follow all directions. Avoid all foods but what is listed on the clear liquid diet.
