Cayenne pepper has been used in the West Indies, Central and South America for thousands of years to flavor food. But some proponents of the pepper claim that the capsaicin in cayenne pepper can help you with weight loss.

    Cayenne pepper is a primary ingredient in The Master Cleanse, a popular diet and cleanse that was created in 1941 by Stanley Burroughs. In his book "The Master Cleanser," Burroughs recommends cayenne pepper to break up mucous and plaque in the gastrointestinal tract and detoxify the body. Some weight loss occurs from the loss of the plaque buildup in the gastrointestinal tract.

Metabolism

    Other proponents of cayenne pepper say that the pepper alone won't cause you to lose weight. However, weight loss does come when cayenne is used to complement a healthful diet and lifestyle. According to alternative health proponents, the capsaicin in cayenne pepper will increase the body's metabolism, which, in combination with a healthful diet and exercise program, will result in weight loss. For increased metabolism, some alternative health advocates recommend imbibing one-quarter teaspoon of cayenne pepper with a glass of water daily.
