How to Eliminate Salt in the Body With Potassium

Salt contains sodium in the form of sodium chloride. Sodium and potassium naturally balance each other in the body. An excess of one will diminish the other. To eliminate too much salt in the body, eat foods rich in potassium or acquire potassium tablets from your doctor. High blood pressure is one result of too much salt in the body. Too much salt in the diet or eating too little potassium-rich foods creates several types of health problems.

    Ask your doctor to review your need for potassium tablets if your blood pressure is extremely high. High blood pressure exacerbated by too much blood sodium can cause a stroke, heart attack or damage to the kidneys and eyes. Don't rely solely on potassium-rich foods to correct any problems. Use prescription potassium pills instead.

    Ingest more natural potassium to help eliminate sodium through the kidneys. Potassium-rich foods such as bananas, melons, fruits and berries contain potassium. Broccoli, cabbage, cottage cheese, milk and beans are rich in potassium. Adopting these foods into your diet should help maintain a sodium-potassium balance.

    Drink two quarts of water daily to eliminate excessive salt in the blood. Merely drinking water will not restore a healthy potassium balance. You will need to ingest potassium-rich foods on a continual basis as well. Magnesium also plays a role in balancing potassium and sodium.

    Use salt substitute products if your sodium levels are high. Potassium chloride is usually the main ingredient of salt substitute products. Many of these products derive their tangy taste from citrus fruit derivatives. This helps curb the craving for table salt.
