Fertility Detox

Before attempting to get pregnant, a woman should take care to ensure that she is healthy by eating nutritious food, exercising, and minimizing exposure to toxins, according to WomensHealth.gov. Detoxifying the body improves fertility by removing toxins that could potentially be dangerous to a fetus, and improving balance within the body.

Toxin Exposure

Before trying to conceive, women and their partners should limit exposure to toxins. Obvious toxins like alcohol, smoking and caffeine should be avoided. Toxins are also found in unexpected places. Paint fumes and dry-cleaning agents contain chemicals that should be avoided. According to the organization Food Consumer, chemicals like phthalates are found in plastics and packaging, and may be a cause of hormonal imbalance.

Food and Water

Nutrition and hydration are an important part of detoxifying the body, but care must be taken to avoid chemicals, particularly while trying to conceive. Pesticides are often used on fruit and vegetables, but can be removed by washing the produce and buying organic when available. Water that is unfiltered from the tap may contain chemicals and toxins; this can be remedied by using a water filter for both drinking water as well as water that comes in contact with the skin during washing and bathing.

Healthy foods should be consumed during a fertility detox. Diet should include whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, lean protein and healthy fats like olive oil. Trans fats should be avoided. Animal products should be limited according to Food Consumer, because of the hormonal content in animal products like milk.

Everyday Products

Toxins can be found in many products used on the skin, like soap and beauty products. Natural products are optimal because they contain fewer chemicals and toxins. Cleaning supplies also contain many different chemicals and should not be used in favor of natural cleaning methods. Pesticides can be toxic and neither partner should use them during the preconception period.

Supplements

Womenshealth.gov recommends taking a daily supplement containing at least 400 micrograms of folic acid. Folic acid before conception will help to decrease the risk of birth defects like spina bifida.
