The Best Foods for High Blood Pressure

Blood pressure has to do with the blood in the body building up pressure against the arteries walls. Having high blood pressure is bad for the body because it can lead to a stroke or heart attack. Usually when people have high blood pressure, doctors recommend that they change their diet because food can help to raise or lower blood pressure. Making slight changes to your diet can really help bring down your blood pressure.

Egg Substitute

Eggs make the blood pressure rise and are high in cholesterol which is bad for your heart. You do not have to do without your egg breakfast though. Just use egg substitute instead. It is much healthier for you and it will not raise your blood pressure. You can usually find egg substitute in small cartons in the dairy section of your local grocery store.

Skim Milk

Not all types of milk are good for a person with high blood pressure. Whole milk is bad for a person with high blood pressure because it helps raise blood pressure. Instead, use low fat or skim milk. Skim milk is the best choice for someone trying to lower blood pressure because it has less fat in it.

Whole Grains

Whenever possible, add whole grains to your diet. When choosing bread, always pick whole wheat breads.

Lean Meats

Try to stay away from fatty meats because they can raise your blood pressure. Instead, chose lean meats. For example, chicken and turkey are great choices for lowering your blood pressure because they are less fatty. Eating fresh or frozen fish is also a great way to lower your blood pressure. For example, salmon is a great choice because it has omega-3s which help the heart function better.

Margarine

When cooking, always chose soft tub margarine to cook with. Stay away from real butter which can raise blood pressure because it is fatty.

Fresh Fruit and Vegetables

Always make sure your meals contain fresh fruit or/and vegetables. These help lower your blood pressure and have other added benefits like nutrients that your body needs. When you need a snack, instead of grabbing a bag of chips, grab a piece of fresh fruit or have some cut up vegetables like celery sticks.
