Foods to Not Eat with Thyroid Problems

Foods to Not Eat with Thyroid Problems

Thyroid disease affects the body's ability to properly process energy. Proper nutrition is vital to help avoid unhealthy levels of potentially damaging substances.

Identification

The most important foods to not eat with thyroid problems are any that are loaded with high levels of cholesterol. A malfunctioning thyroid gland prevents the body from properly regulating the amount of cholesterol present in the body.

Significance

The National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) reports that 90 percent of those suffering from hypothyroidism (an under-active thyroid) also face extreme cholesterol blood levels.

Effects

"If the thyroid gland produces too little hormone, metabolism can slow, having a direct impact on the body's ability to clear cholesterol from the bloodstream," according to the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists.

Warning

A total blood cholesterol level above 200 mg/dL is deemed to be unhealthy for any person. Individuals with a thyroid condition often experience a rate between 30 and 50 percent higher than an acceptable measurement.

Considerations

Reducing cholesterol means cutting consumption of animal products. Minimize eggs, meat, poultry, shellfish and dairy products. "Foods from plants, fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts and seeds don't contain cholesterol," says The American Heart Association
