How to Eat Bagels With Acid Reflux

If you suffer from acid reflux, an affliction where stomach acid and other fluids enter the esophagus, than eating certain foods can be a hassle. Sometimes even eating your favorite morning bagel can be a difficult process as certain additives and condiments commonly put on a bagel can upset your acid reflux. Try taking a few steps to deal with acid reflux and enjoy your morning breakfast or snack. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

    1

Select a bagel that doesn't have any acid-inducing ingredients. Common triggers for acid reflux are things such as tomatoes, onions, garlic and greasy foods. So when selecting your bagel, avoid popular kinds such as everything bagels, tomato basil bagels and garlic bagels. Try a plain or wheat bagel.

    2

Choose a healthy spread. While cream cheese is a popular spread for bagels, dairy products can lead to acid reflux. Avoid tomato cream cheese spread or chive and onion spreads. If you must have that cream cheese, only use a small amount, one to two ounces.

    3

Try and alternative to cream cheese. You can try a little bit of butter or a butter substitute, such as Parkay. Another popular alternative is raw honey, which can be found at most health food stores. Raw honey has been found to help ease symptoms of acid reflux and aid in digestion. Another good alternative is a little bit of hummus, but avoid hummus that is garlic, lemon, tomato or onion infused. Jam or marmalade is another delicious alternative.

    4

Avoid toppings. While certain toppings such as bacon, cheese or sausage, may taste good on a bagel, these foods can upset the stomach because of their high fat and salt content. Instead, opt for a veggie patty or some lettuce and carrot slices, with a little bit of vinegar. While tomatoes can upset the stomach, a thin slice of fresh tomato can be added and shouldn't upset your stomach much as long as the tomato is unprocessed and fresh.

    5

Drink a calming beverage. This can also help keep your acid reflux from occurring by calming the stomach. Avoid drinking a morning cup of coffee, as caffeine can trigger reflux. Instead try an infused, herbal tea, or simply drink a glass of water or apple juice. Also avoid orange juice or lemonade, as the acidity can cause reflux symptoms.
